About Queen’s University

Queen’s University is one of Canada’s better known medium-sized universities. It has a student population of 14, 500 undergraduate and graduate students and 2, 736 part-time students. Renowned nationwide for its traditions and student camaraderie, Queen’s University has developed a fine working relationship with the City of Kingston.

The resources and talents of both the City and Queen’s have been thoughtfully combined as the student body plays an integral role in maintaining an excellent relationship with the residents of Kingston. Situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario, Kingston is considered to be the gateway to the 1,000 Islands. Queen’s is within a three hour drive from Montreal, Ottawa or Toronto.

Organization Committee

The FISU Cross Country 2010 organizational committee is headed by Shane Lakins, Head Coach of Queen’s University Cross Country since 1995. Shane has been Canada’s Head Coach at two previous World University Cross Country Championships (Germany 2000, Spain 2002). and leads the team again in 2008 in Mauquenchy, France. He also served as Canada’s Head Coach for Track & Field at the 2003 Universiade in South Korea.

Coach Lakins is a strong believer in the FISU program and has assembled a team of experienced and passionate volunteers who are committed to bringing Championship Cross Country events to Queen’s University and the City of Kingston. The organizational committee will have the full support of Queen’s Athletics and Recreation.

Cross Country @ Queen’s

Queen’s University’s was established by Royal Charter of Queen Victoria in 1841 - twenty-six years before Canadian confederation. Classes were first held in 1842.

Queen’s has a long tradition of intercollegiate athletic event with the first taking place in 1873. Cross country running is one of the oldest sports at Queen’s University with the first event being r un in 1910.

Today Queen’s University hosts an international open cross-country race each fall that is attended by participants from across Ontario and the north eastern United States. The members of our proposed organizing committee have also been part of organizing and staging several provincial and national championship competitions. The organizing committee for FISU Cross Country Championship in 2010 will have the experience of staging the 2008 Ontario University Cross Country Championships and the 2009 Canadian Cross Country Championships.

Several members of the organizing committee have been the head coaches for Canada at the past four (4) World University Cross Country Championships; we understand the sport, have experience in staging events and look forward to bringing these championships to an even greater prominence.

Proposed Course

The competition venue is a cross-country specific site adjacent to one of Canada’s most recognized tourist attractions, Old Fort Henry. The venue is located on the shores of Lake Ontario overlooking Fort Henry, Royal Military College and Downtown Kingston. Ample parking for spectators and officials is located adjacent to the course. Hotels, training areas, pools and medical support are within walking distance or a short drive to the course. Spectator capacity is unlimited simply by the nature of the course and the large amount of parking available.
