McGiill swimmer wins 4 golds at Quebec championships
SHERBROOKE - Ryan Tomicic of Aylmer, Que., won four gold medals as the Redmen finished third of five teams at the Quebec university swim championships, in Sherbrooke over the weekend. Montreal captured the men's title, followed by Laval, McGill, UQTR and Sherbrooke.
On the women's side, McGill's Joanie Stilling, a freshman from Calgary, garnered one gold, two silvers and a bronze to earn conference rookie-of-the-year honours as the Martlets finished third behind first-place Laval and Montreal. UQTR was fourth and Sherbrooke, fifth.
Tomicic, a law student who turns 26 on Feb. 15, won both the 50 and 200-metre freestyles in 23.56 seconds and 1:52.25, respectively. He also helped McGill finish first in the 4x50 medley relay (1:46.38) and the 4x100 free relay (3:29.24). The fifth-year veteran has won 99 career medals for McGill, including 26 this season.
François Castonguay, a junior from Quebec City, also had a strong meet for the Redmen, winning both the 200 butterfly (2:06.16) and 200 individual medley (2:07.20), in addition to a silver in the 400 IM (4:32.03) and a third-place finish with the 4x200 medley relay squad (4:03.59).
Other McGill gold medalists were Richard Halpert of Acton, Mass., Bryan Long of Toronto and Adam Eilath of North York, Ont., all on the 4x100 free, plus Stephen Preston of Aurora, Ont., Alex Mazar of Whitby, Ont., and Toronto-born David Spencer, with the 4x50 medley relay.
Stilling, the only McGill female to win an event at the meet, was clocked at 9:05.85 in the grueling 800 free. She helped the 4x200 freestyle relay finish second and anchored the 4x100 free to a third-place finish. Stilling also posted a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyles.
McGill has qualified nine men and nine women for the CIS championship in Halifax, Feb. 22-24
