Cross Country - Gryphons Dash to XC Gold
27 Oct, 2007 -- Gryphons Saturday Roundup Saturday, October 27, 2007 Cross Country - Gryphons Dash to Cross Country Gold The Guelph Gryphons cross country team dominated the OUA Championships sweeping the team and individual titles on Saturday held at the Thames Valley Golf Club in London, Ont. In the women's individual event, rookie Lindsay Carson (Cambridge, Ont) led throughout most of the race to pace the Gryphons to the women's team title. The first-year Biomedical Engineering student, finished with a time of 17:36 in the 5-km race, leading the pack and pace her team to victory. Carson was also named OUA Rookie of the Year, League MVP and a First Team All-Star. Carson, won the Gryphon Open earlier this season and is a multiple national team member who competed Pan-Am juniors and the world cross-country champs. She's also a former OFSAA and national champion. On the men's side, second-year Kyle Boorsma (Guelph, Ont) led the Gryphons finishing with a time of 31:48 to win the men's 10-km race at the OUA Cross Country Championships. For Boorsma, it was a matter of perfect timing to win the race, "I just kept grinding it out and stuck with the pack," he said. "I broke away late in the race. I used my threshold training to start running away from the pack. (Queen's runner Braden) Novakowski broke away with me and we worked together to make the breakaway stick." In windy conditions, they broke away with a two-man pack. Novakowski tried to break away from Boorsma late around a corner, but the Gryphons runner held it off and ended up holding him off and instead took the lead for good to take the victory. Gryphons Top Finishers: Women 1st - Lindsay Carson - 1st team all-star / OUA Rookie of the Year / League MVP 4th - Jessica Vanhie - 1st team all-star 5th - Rachel Cliff - 1st team all-star 12th - Chantel Novak - 2nd team all-star 13th - Lindsay Furtado - 2nd team all-star Men 1st - Kyle Boorsma - 1st team all-star 4th - Matt Brunstring - 1st team all-star 5th - Andre Paul Baillargeon-Smi - 1st team all-star 9th - Angus McAuley - 2nd team all-star 10th - Joe Brunstring - 2nd team all-star
